Why do Japanese People Take Off Their Shoes When They Commit Suicide by Jumping?

There are no actual statistics saying that Japanese people have more percentage of people taking off their shoes when they committed suicide by jumping. One of the TV-Series showed a scene of an actor taking off his shoes before jumping so it became a known performance. However, as the same Japanese, I can understand something about it.

As you may know, in Japan, we take off our shoes at the entrance of our houses to change into slippers. At schools, we will take off our shoes at the shoebox in the building entrance, and change into indoor shoes to go inside the class. When we have a gym class, we will change into a gym shoes from our indoor shoes. At Ryokan (Japanese style hotel) or Japanese restaurants, we will take off our shoes at the entrance and enter with a slipper. In tatami-mat room, we will also take off our slippers and enter barefoot.

There are some reasons why the Japanese people takes off their shoes: due to the weather and high humidity, due to material of the houses made of wood and the custom of laying futon on the floor to sleep on it. Here, we will try to find out the reason why the Japanese people take off their shoes on the different angle. There is a knows idea of having a break-off point between outside and inside, or entering one space to another, to enter the future from the past and will need to have this “区切り” (Kugiri, break-off point).

These images from “The Fruit of Grisaia” are a scene where the close friend of “Michiru” jumps off and commits suicide. She puts off her shoes on her will to keep it not fly by the wind. As I said earlier, there are no statistics showing that there are many Japanese who take off their shoes when jumping and committing suicide.

Coming from a living world entering the world of dead is a break-off point for one’s life. I will repeat that there are no facts that shoes more Japanese people taking of their shoes before committed suicide, however it is understandable to take off their shoes before this mental decision to commit suicide.

These images from “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” are a scene where a woman attempts to jump down and commit suicide by the malice of a witch. However, Despite taking off or not one’s shoes, please do not commit suicide! (I think it is excellent that I am living and watching Grisia and MadoMagi.)
