What is “伊勢” (いせ, Ise) ?
“伊勢” (いせ, Ise) is a city located in the southeastern part of Mie prefecture. The Ise Grand Shrine (伊勢神宮, いせじんぐう, Ise Jingu) is famous in this area.
To travel from Tokyo to Ise, it takes 3-4 hours by train. The reason it takes this much time is because you need to change trains, even when you fly from Tokyo. If you are travelling from Osaka, it takes about 2 hours by train as they are close.
The name Ise was used during the Ritsuryo period (律令時代, りつりょうじだい, 700-1000 A.D.) as the old name of the province. Until the end of the Pacific War (WWII), battleships were generally named after old provinces, like Ise. According to “Kantai Collection (艦隊これくしょん, Kantai Korekushon)”, The name of the battleship “Ise” follows this example.
