What are the Flowers You Offer at the Grave?

We traditionally offer chrysanthemums at the graves in Japan like this image from “Ga-Rei: Zero”. Why? There are the following reasons for this:

  • They are resistant to withering
  • The petals don’t scatter and make a mess when the flowers die
  • They come in many colors (white, yellow, purple, red, pink etc.)

What is the national flower of Japan ? Both the chrysanthemum and the cherry blossom are national flowers of Japan. You can see a chrysanthemum printed on Japanese passports and 50 yen coins. For Japanese people, chrysanthemums are as important as cherry blossoms.
