Are Cicadas Summer Insects?

Yes, they are.

Japanese people feel the beginning of summer in July when cicadas begin to cry. The peak of summer is in August, when they give off the loudest cry. Then in September, they become quiet and made us realize it is late summer. Out of the 30 kinds of cicadas in Japan, there are about 10 common ones. People who are a little familiar with the cicadas can recognize the species by the noise that they make.

In this image from “In Search of the Lost Future”, this is one of the species called “Higurashi” (ひぐらし). Yes, as you might have noticed, this is a part of the anime title “When they cry” (ひぐらしのなく頃に, Higurashi no Naku koro ni). Their noise gives us a nostalgic feeling.
